Role of the Counselor within School
Professional Learning Communities  (PLCs)

School counselors participate in district school counseling PLCs to focus on improving their school
counseling program, but they are also an important participant in PLCs at their school.  Here are a
few ways that a school counselor contributes to PLCs at the school.

By participating in PLCs at the school, school counselors can:

  1. Collaborate with teachers and other staff to identify student needs
  2. Suggest quality solutions to problems
  3. Provide resources for referral to appropriate interventions for students
  4. Identify development issues that may be impeding academic progress
  5. Suggest strategies to improve student behavior and attendance
  6. Gather information about personal/social or development needs of students
  7. Share information about activities and programs within the comprehensive school
counseling program that are available to address student needs
  8. Facilitate communication between PLC members
