A MIND at a TIME
"No Child Left Behind"--already those words are sending tremors
throughout
our beings; however I have a book for you that is a great resource. I
was
watching the "Oprah" show (I admit it--I enjoy it); when
she had Mel
Levine M.D. as a guest speaker. I was fascinated by what he was
saying and
the seeming "miracles" he has worked with young people who
were struggling
with learning difficulties. I taped the show and then later ordered
his
book, and I fell for it, "hook, line, and sinker." The
name of the book is
A MIND at a TIME, in which this top learning expert and
pediatrician shows
how every child can succeed. He is the Founder of the ALL KINDS
OF MINDS
INSTITUTE, and the Director of the CENTER FOR DEVELOPMENT AND
LEARNING. We all know that different brains are wired differently
and that there are eight fundamental systems, or components, of learning
that draw on a variety
of neuro-developmental capacities. Some students are strong in
certain areas
and some are strong in others, but no one is equally capable in all eight.
Dr. Levine shows how parents, teachers and children can identify their
strengths and weaknesses to determine their individual learning styles.
However, this book goes far beyond the basic "learning
style" mode. Some of
the chapters that I especially enjoyed were: Relating to Relating:
Our
Social thinking System; When a Mind Falls Behind; and Getting a Mind
Realigned (but not Redesigned). This book is not only invigorating
for your
mind but it is written in an easy to read style with many examples taken
from Dr. Levine's own experiences that makes for very fascinating reading.
