Odd Girl Out
I would like to recommend a “must
read” to middle school counselors. (Also, high school and elementary
counselors could benefit by reading this book.) It is Rachel Simmons’
book, “Odd Girl Out”. It discusses the subtle bullying and
aggression of young girls toward each other. There are wonderful case
studies that any one of us could have written and there are suggestions
for parents, teachers, and counselors. This book has given me new
insight into the world of girls who use backbiting, exclusion, rumors,
name-calling, and manipulation to inflict psychological pain on targeted
victims, other girls. Many girls in the 11-14 age range have endured
such pain to an extent that it has marred relationships for the rest of
their lives. Middle school counselors need to read this one.
