much where we

direction we are

DELEGATE ASSEMBLY

What an exciting time to be part of school counseling!  Our Delegate Assembly
consists of representatives from each state based on the number of ASCA
members within your state.  In Kansas, the President and President Elect
attend the Delegate Assembly.  However, some states have four or five
representatives.  This year, Kansas was seated up front by the head table with
delegates from North Carolina.
The Delegate Assembly is run using Policy Governance which ASCA is using
and encouraging state leaders to utilize as well.  This gives more “power” to
the committees to actually do the work of the “hows” or logistical stuff that
gets every meeting bogged down.  Then, they simply report back their
findings.
Some of the items presented this year were the nominations/elections for the
upcoming year, bylaws amendments, position statements, financial report,
review of specific state bylaws, and awards/recognition.  They did mention a
new feature in advocacy of school counselors.  ASCA, NASSP (National
Association for Secondary School Principals) and College Board have
collaborated to create some books and pamphlets on the importance of the
school counselor and administrator relationship.  Please go the website below
and find more information, video clips, PowerPoint, and pamphlets.

ASCA CONFERENCE “MAKING A
DIFFERENCE” JUNE 28 –JULY 1/DALLAS, TX

I was very impressed with the conference in Dallas.  This was my first time at
an ASCA Conference.  Deb Woodard and I attended from KSCA.  We had a
great time learning from all the presentations, keynotes, and meeting new
people from all over the United States and world!  I believe the toughest part
was trying to figure out which sessions to attend – there were so many good
ones to choose from!  The sessions I attend were very good and I hope to
bring back some valuable information to share with school counselors in
Kansas.  There were very few of us from the great state of Kansas.  We ran
into Kent Reed from KSDE and another school counselor from Kansas who
came on her own.  I am sure this is due to budget cuts and everyone being
more restrictive with their finances.
The evenings were a lot of fun with a planned “Desserts & Disco” dance
where you see us shaking a leg!  On a more serious note, we toured the Sixth
Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza, former Texas School Book Depository.  It was
so moving to see all the photographs, videos, an even the window where
John F. Kennedy was fatally shot.

LDI (LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTE)

Although last year was my first year to attend LDI as President Elect for KSCA,
it seems each year gets better!  Lori Mitchell-Kandt, President Elect and I
went to Cleveland, OH for a Rockin’ good time at LDI!  We learned a lot from
the ASCA board and met lots of school counselors from around the USA.
During our meetings, we shared a table with our geographic region of
Nebraska, Missouri, Iowa, and Illinois.  It was great to sit with them and share
experiences, ideas, and find out the successes and struggles each state
school counselor organization faces.  We learned by watching an actual board
meeting, reviewed Policy Governance, and learned TONS from Russell
Sabella, PhD. on using technology with your association.
Our last evening was at the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame with a lovely dinner and
time to go throughout the museum.  Lori and I decided time moved too
quickly that evening since we did not make it to every exhibit but what we did
see was great!

Overall, I am so grateful to KSCA for allowing me to serve as
your President and for granting me these great opportunities
for growth.  I look forward to a great year with you!
