School Counselors are now included in the group of mental health
volunteers.  Check with your local Red Cross
so that you can be one of those volunteers!

Red Cross Recruiting Disaster Mental Health Workers in
Preparation for Hurricane Gustov

The Red Cross is recruiting for Disaster Mental Health (DMH) workers in
preparation for Hurricane Gustov and is asking for registered and non-
registered Disaster Mental Health-eligible volunteers to contact their local
chapter if they are available to deploy to the gulf states. Use the chapter
locator on
www.redcross.org to find the closest Red Cross chapter.
People who haven't received the Red Cross Foundations of Disaster
Mental Health training may have to wait to deploy until a training can be
scheduled (or until a decision is made to do trainings at a staging site or
at the relief operation). In either case, those interested should contact
their chapter to begin the process of registering as a Red Cross
volunteer. Those of you who are already registered as Red Cross DMH
workers, please contact your chapter to update your availability in DSHR
(the Red Cross national database system) as this will facilitate your
deployment. Also, if you’re not able to deploy until a later date, updating
your availability in DSHR will expedite a later deployment as well.

KCA Listserv Information

I am so excited to see the listserv getting utilized so much recently.  I want to send out a little reminder
about how to post messages to the list.  It is best if you would like to post a message to follow the
protocol below, that way all responses get sent back directly to you.

•      To post a message please send the message to:
kca-l@mail.pittstate.edu
(Note:  kca-l is the letter l as in listserv, not the number 1)

•        Hitting “Reply to all” will send the message reply to the entire
listserv.

Also please remember the following when posting a message to the
listserv:

•        When posting a message to the list, please include your name,
school/organization, and an e-mail address at the end of your message.
This helps keep communication clear and transparent, and facilitates
direct follow-up.

•        Include a subject in the "subject line" of your message. This will
help other list members choose among the messages to read and
respond to, and will make your questions/answers/discussion easier to
find in the archives. For example, if you are discussing eating disorders,
use the words "eating disorders" in the subject line.

Remember
that the listserv has a number of counselors from all different professions and it can
be very beneficial to include in the subject line who the topic pertains to, for example if the subject is
generally of a school counseling nature, you might put “For School Counselors” in the subject line, or
if the message is of interest to those in South Central, you might put “Attention South Central
Counselors.

I hope that helps, and I hope to see continued use of the listserv as I believe this is a great way to
network with counselors all over the state.  Please do not hesitate to contact me with other questions.

Information You May Be Interested In:  College 101

Educators work diligently to prepare students for the academic rigors of college. But despite
our best efforts, the current first-year college drop-out rate is still 26%. We focus a great deal
on academic preparation, which can make it difficult to educate students about the lifestyle
transitions they will encounter in college. But there is hope! Research has shown the positive
impact of preparing students for the many different aspects of college life, and we’ve
developed a new research-based curriculum to help.

College 101: Strategies for First Year Success was named the 2007 “Best Program Package in
the Nation” by the Journal of Youth Development. The program covers basic academic
protocols, problem-solving techniques, study tips, and social scene strategies for first year
college students. The interactive format even includes video clips with advice from current
college students! A preview of the program is available on our website, www.
college101seminars.com, and program reviews are included on the attached document.

We believe the College 101 Seminar Edition will be of particular interest to your membership.
It can be taught in varying lengths from 1-4+ hours, and includes teacher guides, handouts,
and other valuable resources.  The Seminar Edition retails for only $159, but we are able to
offer a 25% discount for KSCA members.  Even larger discounts would be available for bulk
orders made by KSCA.  A Self-Study Edition for students and their parents is also available
($19.95 retail).

College 101 is designed to serve the needs of students, all the while making the job of school
counselors easier and more effective. Please let me know if I can provide additional
information.
